    EURO TRIP

This is a transcribed version of my Euro Trip. It's in reverse order, so go to the end to begin, beginning of June.  Enjoy, friends!

    7/1/05

In La Guardia Airport, stayed in Jazz on Park Hostel last nt.  Met Patricia from Madrid on shuttle, going to Columbia didn't know where to stay bay have gone to hostel.  Excited to get back home, read comedy secrets, order (illegible, fod lawg?) thing, (illegible com video?)

-met girl from Brooklyn @ food court, thought of a joke. . .what about?
        -disney
        -miami
        -missing flight
        -norfolk st.
-(comedy potential: if woman were vast majority in congress, unsaid.) (was trying to say much would go unsaid, angry glares and subtle insults don't make it into congressional record.I)  42+ go to bathroom @ once
-weird: kid just was walking w/mom, stopped, lay down, she grabs him, not their gate, he cries a bit, just wanted to stop moving.
-saw sideways, part, part of "Ray" on plane, mustget into tennis!  went to C. park again.  had 30-40 courts in a row, I'd love to try that.

-Comedy: I was the most awkward POS in high school: there were some guys that you might consider bigger dorks, but that's only because they got good grades.  I didn't even have that going for me!

    Euro Trip June 30
    6/30

    • In London Heathrow
    • Left Sagrada familia poster at hostel, pissed
    • what the fuck is up with my bladder? (I later found out my "frequent trips" were the result of much alcohol and caffiene.  It sure sucked at the time)  Can it not completely empty, or is it constantly refilling?
    • Just boarded. . .some kids were happy they get to sit upstairs. . .oh, we get to be 35,010 feet above the ground!. . .(I'm so jealous.)
    • Met Anna, who finished her 1st year of med school @ nottingham.  C+F calling her a liar, she made it easy, I asked her where she'd been in US, she only said one place, but said more + more +more, bit by bit. . ."clearly lying," funny.

    6/29

Next day, went to beach at Olympic Village metro stop w/ Landon + Jessica.  5 hrs or so, sun wasn't was covered the first couple.  I think I'm @ my tan limit, Landon burned.  started raining, went to restaurant, I got ravioli + pesto, they meat + eggs.  back to beach, sunny.  Then ba at beach many boobs, good + bad.  Old lady, Jessica said to Landon, "There's your girlfriend. . .I'll pay for her to come to NY (upstate) to juump out of your birthday cake!"  Lots of guys walking on beach selling drinks.  Back Cool water, quick to adjust.  Back to hostel, 2 L beer for me, then --> La Rampla after they did their laundry.  Told them some of Ben Folds stuff before leaving.  Ramblas much dodgier @ nt.  (We went to a restaurant and) Got 2 paellas (meat, seafood), kangaroo meat.  Joked @ Jessica for seeing kangaroo on menu, ""kangaroo killer!"  walked --> place where me + christina smoked a few years back, went to restaurant across bay.

They told us we could return on the drawbridge, not true (it closed soon after we arrived).  Asked for 2 Baile's + coffee, waiter didn't seem to understand, didn't  have?  Offered Irish coffee, which we thought was the same.  No, coffee + whiskey.  Charged us extra for this, despite us not knowing what we'd ordered.  Now, I'd just given L+J the deconstruction lecture, was in stick-up-for-self mood, "puedo hablar con manager," explained, (mind you, reader, this is in broken spanish-english dialogue. . .anyway, he said something like. . .) "If he offered and you accepted," "but not what we thought we ordered." they took back 2nd round, owner explained situation to waiter.  Then (manager?) said, "no somos tontos" (we aren't stupid) me, "no somos tontos tambien!" (tampoco, better).  But, got charge reduced.  Walked back to hostel, explained DYD stuff.  (Had absynthe @ Columbus statue, HORRIBLY strong, black licorice, Jaeger x2, nearly vomited.)  (160 proof)

    (base of the Columbus statue)

L looks like Sly Stallone, blonde.  Did Rocky boxing pose, uncanny.

    Me, Landon, Jessica

Very pleasant, relaxing day.  now, about 3.5 hr --> Narbonne.  Then --> Paris, then --> London.  Still have 5 Pounds to use for underground to Generator.  Will be traveling until perhaps 11:00 or so, 8:45 AM now.  Lots of sleep + reading ahead of me.
    • Other day, C+F facebook msg.  Sarah Knapp C+F, but better de nada.  In contact again (I suppose?) She's going to Germany in August.
    • Bought a Ordered a print of "Lobster + Cat" online, should be @ home when I get there, or soon after.
    • Want ticked checker to come so I can find WC without guilt.  Ahh, here she comes!  Apparently, person far behind me doesn't have one.   We stopped @ a subway station, girls got on mistakenly.
    • The train station was in the center of town, so we use the subway system. . .but just now left it, in open sun, out of subway system.
    • In hostel, told Landon of take 8 poverty concert (or whatever it's called), (talked about the) diseased curse of celebrity, Jay-Z's ugliness and the possibilities for his kids if w/ beyonce.
    • Oh!  found out from myspace.com (from Leelah), that One Man Anry is now OneBeLo, new album (no longer Binary Star, but I think he may still work w/ decomposed), must get album.  Has rave reviews, of course.
    • Must study Derrida again. . .writing personal statement + deconstruction
    • --> WC
    • Glad OneBeLo's still doing his stuff.  Of course, who could stop a guy so talented + determined but himself?
    • Smart recliners on train: ass moves forward, back remains put, doesn't intrude on person behind.
    • It's the One Man Army
      General Subliminal
      Dive into the water
      Ready for war with syllables
      Literary military top-secret mission
      you ain't seen nothin' yet
      How deep can I get?
    • was awesome he's gdoing well enough to be seen on a national website like that.
    • Jessica and Landen are virgins, at 18, together 6 months.  How about that?  Hard to believe. . .understand. (did this mean it's hard to understand, or "I understand"?  I don't know, and don't remember.)
    • mixed blue absynthe + sprite + orange fanta, became green, EVEN WORSE taste, still EXTREMELY strong
    • We'd hit the bottom.
I thought it was my fault--
And in a way I guess it was.
      I'm just now finding out
      What it was all about
We moved to the west coast
      away from everyone
She never told me that you called
      Back when I was still--
      I was still in love

      But I opened my eyes
      and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down,
      And it's bye-bye! goodbye! I tried.
      And I twisted it wrong
      just to make it right
      had to leave myself behind
And it's bye bye! goodbye! I tried.
      So come pick me up--
      I've landed.

(picture in journal here of a plane descending in altitude, a descending line showing his trail, representing falling music line)

The daily promise (dramas. . .that makes much more sense!)
      She made from nothing
So nothing ever made it right
      She liked to push me
      And talk me "back down!"
'Till i believed     I was the crazy one
      And in a way--I guess I was

      Till I opened my eyes
      and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down
      And it's bye bye!  good-bye! I tried.
Treading the sea of her troubled mind
      Had to leave myself behind
And I've been flying high all night!

And if you wrote me off
      I'd understand it
      Cause I've been on
      Some other planet
      So come pick me up--
      I've landed.

      And you will be so
      Happy to know
      I've come alone
      It's over.

(drawing of stick figure raising arms in triumph, standing next to an exclamation point, then another descending line for music)

      And I opened my eyes
      and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down
      And it's bye-bye! Goodbye! I tried!
Down comes the reign of the telephone czar!
      It's okay to call
And I will answer for myself!
      Come pick me up!
      (Baa, ba-da-da ba ba baba
Ba! ba-da-da, ba ba ba ba
Ba da ba ba ba da da da da dah!

(line lowering, rising as in the song)

      Come pick me up!
      Ba ba!  Ba ba!
Ba ba, ba ba ba ba
      Ba ba ba ba ba
      I've landed!

    • hey, my sinuses allergies or whatever are gone!
    • past 2 hrs, Daily Show, Nicole Kidman
    • I should see Simon Birch
    • some guy stood up on this trian to Paris, said orated for a couple minutes in French.  No idea what he said, people seemed to just be annoyed.
    • The ticket check guy was ginormously tall, almost to part of ceiling
    • should see movie w/ Tom Hanks as souther "gentleman"
    • On Paris --> London leaving Paris station soon.  Almost missed train, went through 45 min line, wrong one. . .entered another long one, saw couldn't make, --> info, pointed me to no line check-in desk right before passport check.  A few people cut entirely through 1st line, someone tried to do to me, I said I have no extra time, true, she cut anyway, I went to window, "she cut the entire line," did my business, he directed me upstairs.
    • Bathroom a lot, maybe it was the absynthe.  Check now, see if alcohol - linked in book.
    • Late memory: Amsterdam, after 420 cafe 2nd time, taking train back, paranoid as hell, very timid, horrible.  Asked God-force for reprieve, and I wouldn't smoke anymore in Amst-dam.  (I didn't write in my journal, but it worked!  I felt calm again, suddenly).  didn't.  Gave bud to roommates, at 1st for free, but aske d for some $, felt bad reneging, but they got a good deal.
    • had ham baguette in Nordonne, expensive for cheap sandwich, 3.20 euro.  In Paris, Sure de Nord is in Indian district, had coffee +  Indian egg=roll-looking thing.
    • when guy cut whole line, went up very cool, "excuse me," up to counter, someone with them, he (cutter) nodded, got receptionist to nod, cuter also nodded w/ hand @ same time as head, so lookked like he'd had something prearranged,, but girl told on him, receptionist moved to diff. booth while telling him to wait.  pretty nice move (hand nod)
    • -"Cooler Than You" in head.

    6/27 Barcelona
In mid-east restaurant again, shwarma again for first time.  Turned on fan myself this time.

    • Great day in Barcelona.  Last but met Langdon + Jessica (upstate NY couple, will still be in town), Leelah + Darci (2 girls from Anaheim, CA).  Talked long time about out trips, etc.
    • Today, hung out w/ Leelah + Darci all day.  They had a plan, I joined them.  Churches, Sagrada Familia, park, drink, eat.

      Sagrada Familia Church

      Isn't that HOT?

The modern facade of Sagrada Familia

      Modern Jesus

      Modern Stained Glass

The Gothic Facade of Sagrada Familia

      Lower detail, same facade

      Pictures from Gaudi's Park:

That's right. THE Barcelona Dragon, the one the NFL Europe team's named after. He's my bitch.

A couple buildings in the park.  Clearly, Gaudi was reincarnated as Dr. Seuss.

      open area in the park

Leelah loves the column.  LOVES it.

      More park.

      Above the columns

More open park area.  Very Wizard of Oz.

    • At spanish rest,(aurant) 12 euro/person, 3 courses + sangria/not especially good, but great cream+burnt yolk cake.  lots of fun, C+F, (illegible)Went Got sweet Sagrada Familia poster,  Barcelona Dragon figure.

Talk of JC, Arc d'Triumf.  Cool pictures.  Ramblas, birds, water, Sunny D.  It's 10:08 now, their overnight Bern or Basel leaves at 10:38, trying to not be late.  C+F, made fun of Darci's low cut shirt (everyone's nice to me!  that's because of that low cut shirt).  Leelah laughed, "thanks for saying that."  They've seen NO movies, Pulp Fiction, others.  XNS.  Also went to Gaudi's house.  Beautiful.  Audio tour, sweet architecture.  Don't know where I'll go tomorrow, maybe beach.  have plenty of 10 train pass ticket left.  Talk of what needed in life mate.  #1 for both of them was love God w/all your heart.  Leel long talk to Leelah on the topic, she said I'm the most open person she's ever talked to on the subject.  Up the (airy mountain, down the rushing glen.  We daren't go hunting. . .for fear of little men. . .excuse my random Willy Wonka tinker reference. . .back to the journal. . .up the)  narrow dark stairs of Sagrada Familia, shitting myself as always, but nice to have people to laugh at me.  Long "stairs that never end" on way down.  Silly poses at Arc D'Triumf.

    Arc

Gelato, strawberry excellent.  Church, nice stained glass.

They both lost a friend on autobahn last yera, and every church Darci goes to she lights a candle for her/him?  she was sniffling, crying.  Shafts of light shot in through open section of the stained glass window into a few of the pews, I sat in it.  Drinking Limon fanta now, simmilar to squirt, less bite.  Shwarma was good, crispy fries.  bought + smoked a small cuban Cohiba today, Leelah contributed, smoked some.  she also bought me water, a shot, very generous.

Left to right: Darci, me, Leelah

I helped Darci, bag was heavi, I offered to carry, she refused politely, I left offer on table until she needed to rest her back.  In Gaudi's house, was a guest book.  wrote

    Marc Kaufman
    This book is now priceless.
    you're welcome.
perhaps a drawing of homer simpson too, not sure.

Gaudi's (repeatedly spelled it Guardi at this time) househad blue tile in center shaft incresing in porcelain 3-D blueness as height increased.

There were viewing panes which made it look like underwater, excellent picture.

Sweet hologram of Gaudi welcoming visitors, amazing surprise.

(this hologram would actually wave at you as you walked by, and a message saying "Bienvenido (welcome) would show as well.)

And some other pictures of Gaudi's house:

A random ceiling sculpture inside the house

Barcelona's such a cool city.  Think I'll read tonight.

        When the Tweedle Beatles battle
with the paddles in a puddle
in a bottle on a poodle
        and the poodle's eating noodles. . .

Tested my comedy on Darci + Leelah last nt, good, receptive, open, suggestive, interactive audience.

C+F: reaced onto Darci's bag to look at sanitizer stuff, she was like, "huh! didn't know what you were doing there."  "Sorry, didn't do what you wanted me to do."  (I don't quite remember what made this funny, but I think the bag was probably under her bed while she lay on it.  I think I was suggesting she was hoping I was reaching for her.  They're not all gems, folks.)

    • Couple hours later, I just got in bed. . .*knock**knock*. . .they were back!  they misread 20:38 as 10:38 pm, not 8:38, missed train (fail to mention, they left some bags in a taxi)The were distraught, I tried to help, got a cabbie to give them a # for lost + found, offered to get them dinner (believe they lost wallet, too), back to room.  Leelah lost toiletrie bag, too, had that stuff contact solution, $300 glasses, mother's ring mother didn't know she had borrowed.  oops.  "cute earrings," too.  Snacks for them, I MUST not miss train to Paris tomorrow.

Darci and Leelah after missing train.  Darci looks especially ruined, doesn't she?

    • Langdon + Jessica got back, good mood.  We find out they had absynthe, were giggly.  I TORE THEM UP w/ joke.  she said "We really haven't been hallucinating."  I said, to Leelah, as if I were Jessica, "You ARE an octopus, right?"  they couldn't stop laughing.  Also she Jessica had a cough, I offered advil, leelah gave halls.  Jessica: You're just helping because I'm coughing all loud."  me, "well we sure as hell don't CARE about you."  all laughing.

    • Today, to go to beach w/ Langdon, (awake), jJessica (asleep).  it's maybe 10 am (10:25)
    • Leelah + Darci gone, got alternate trains.

Day 2 NY (written from London train)
    more central park, foresty.
    -Guggenheim, stripes exhibit.

metropolitan museum closed didnt feel up to it anyway.  food: montecristo spinach + mushroom quiches, no seats, ~$11.  Then --> Columbia, talk to secretary.  May apply.
--> WTC.  I was surprised to find the behaviou or the vast majority of New Yorkers when passing ground zero.  They suddenly quieted to silence (not so surprising), and nobody but tourists took more than a fleeting glance.  Most kept their eyes averted completely.  My throat tightened slightly as I advanced, viewing the remaining crumbled buildings and the empty vast floor.  I was surprised how much it impacted me.

Only tourists looked, stared.  "No writing on wall" on fence, and I almost laughed inside.  Words were fated to be written as soon as the medium was available.

2 firemen, tried to take a picture of them looking at the site, they saw me, I felt ashamed and walked away.  I felt sick for trying to sentimentalize it all, and walked up to them.  I could hardly speak when I asked if they'd take a picture with me.  I sounded like a mouse.  I struggled to talk, and to not cry, and merely handed off the camera to a tourist.

    June 5, 2005. NYC
Went through Central Park, saw huge female duck, not sure what it ws, see picture.
    (the one on the right)

Went to bar, Columbia U.  Will revisit Columbia tomorrow, go to metropolitan museum.  south manhattan.  Hostel's pretty nice.  Rereading Tar Baby. . .am I wasting my time here?  Go out tonight?  Socialize more?
-some older people at the hostel haven't met roommates yet.  Given up on going to Daily Show, going to Conan--would waste the whole day waiting in line.  Worth it?
-DYD indifference doesn't feel so far a cry from mid-school personality, but I know I have the tools now to do what I want.  Should I make some acquaintences?  Or just keep reading all night...not a good idea.
-Pretty girl in pink sitting to my left + front.  Another on right, reading.

BEN FOLDS: "There's Always Someone Cooler than You."

    Smile
Like you've got nothing to prove
No matter what you might do
There's always someone out there cooler than you

I know that's hard to believe
But there are people you meet
They're into something that is too big to be

    Expressed
    Through their clothes
And they'll put up with all the poses you'll throw
    And you won't

    Even know
that they're not sizing you up
They know your mom fucked you up
Or maybe let you watch too much TV

    (forgot lyrics)

Make me feel tiny if it makes you feel tall
But there's always someone cooler than you

Yeah, you're the shit but you won't be here for long
Oh, there's always someone cooler than you
Yeah, there's always someone cooler than you

Now that I've got the disease
    In a way I'm relieved
'Cause I don't have to stress about it like you do

I might just get up and dance
    Or buy some acid-wash pants
(forget the rest of the lyrics)
